Not every day does a CFL head coaching job become available, and because there’s an opening with the Lions, TSN analyst Paul LaPolice has expressed interest (Files)
One hat is in the ring.
Paul LaPolice wasn’t big on coming to the B.C. Lions last year to work as an offensive coordinator with Mike Benevides but a chat with the former coach of the CFL team has him interested in exploring the head coaching vacancy.
The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers coach talked with Benevides following his dismissal by Lions general manager Wally Buono Thursday, and it’s not difficult to believe what was top of mind for LaPolice.
“Paul’s interested,” said a league source familiar with the discussions. “He’s concerned about autonomy.” Any coach with CFL experience will have the same thought with regard to the Lions opening, which may determine whether or not Buono opts for a young candidate in order to retain a bigger say in the direction of the team.
It will be a lot easier for the Lions to get LaPolice than Calgary offensive coordinator Dave Dickenson, who signed a three-year contract extension at this time last season. Dickenson may have to decide whether he would like to wait for John Hufnagel to relinquish head coaching duties with the Stamps or seek an immediate opportunity with the Lions. In an interview with the Calgary Sun Thursday, the former Lions quarterback indicated he was all about returning to the Stamps next season, which on some levels makes LaPolice the leading candidate, though the positioning that comes with these types of proceedings is just getting started.
It’s expected LaPolice and Buono will meet informally next week and if there’s mutual interest more detailed talks will take place following the conclusion of the Nov. 30 Grey Cup game.
